I have a collection of new tiny artworks in a show at the Angelica Kauffman Gallery, a miniature gallery within the larger Carriage House Gallery in Oak Park. I am calling my miniature show Aerial, and the opening is tomorrow afternoon from 1:00-3:00, alongside the opening for the annual Portrait & Figure Show at OPAL.
Pieces are all mixed media – acrylic paint, ink, oil pastel, and collage on Rives BFK printmaking paper – and they range in size from 3/4″ to 2 1/2″ inches in any direction, and they are all framed. One of the photos has a door key on the shelf for reference to the scale.
By the nature of the size of these artworks, they all feel like tiny glimpses of peaceful views from a perch in nature, hence the name Aerial. Some are intimate and some are expanses, and all have somewhat of an otherworldly feel, which I would not say I was going for, but happened anyway. To me they feel airy and calm at first glance, and layered when I look closer.
I love working in miniature just as much as I love working much larger, and this is my second exhibition of 1:12 scale artwork. I do like the feeling of these as I begin a larger series for 2026, so I will hopefully carry this feeling into the bigger pieces. I’m getting ahead of myself. For now, if you like miniature work and want a nice place to spend some time with art (including a juried portrait and figure show!) stop by the Oak Park Art League tomorrow : )

Spring mixed media classes will begin the week of March 16. Keep an eye on OPAL’s website over the next couple of weeks for registration, and I will send an email to my student list as soon as it is up.
