The Winter 2 Session of classes is open for registration, and I’ve gotten a couple of reports of OPAL’s registration website being a little buggy. The bugs have been fixed, but if you attempt to register and you get a notice that classes are closed, please email me or call the gallery to register over the phone and to let them know if there is a website problem. Sign up here.
Winter 2 runs from February 14 – March 19, and I will have mixed media classes on Tuesday afternoons from 4:00-6:00, and Saturday mornings, from 10:00-12:00 noon. So far there are enough people registered that I can confirm they will both happen, so I look forward to seeing you in class! As always, please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have questions about the class or the supply list.
I am so excited to be working on a series of paintings for Scottish classical pianist Kate Durran! They will be for a series of concerts she is performing in the Spring, starting with Bach’s Toccatas. I have seven pieces going for that, since there are seven Toccatas. Then after that, Liszt’s Harmonies du Soir, Schubert’s Four Impromptus, Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, and then Bach and Busoni’s Chaconne.
I will do a post to show progress and finished pieces for each song, but for now I’ll just say that they all seem to have in common a symphonic poetry that makes painting them so engaging, and depth mixed with almost ethereal melodies and rich harmonies.
This project is an anniversary of sorts, as I did a similar project for Kate back in 2009 for the Ruckert Lieder, the poems of Friedrich Ruckert interpreted into music by Gustav Mahler. I responded to the music, for sure, but in many pieces translated the lyrics into narrative painting. Here are four of eight of them:
Looking forward to sharing the 2022 series with you soon!
